Question regarding a particular recomendation for nafl prayers.

Question:

Salamo alykom

I was reading an answer by Sidi Fadi Qutub Zada for the question titled "The Fiqh of Voluntary (Nafl) Prayers: An exposition of the prayers not directly related to the obligatory prayers". Towards the end of the article he states that
------------------------------
It is recommended to worship on the following nights:

1- The Night of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr

It is reported by Ibn Majah (1782) that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, "Whoever stood in worship on the two nights of the two Eids (Adha and Fitr) expecting great reward from Allah, his heart will not die the day the hearts die.
-----------------------------

My question is regarding the hadith. I have read in several places that that particular hadith cannot be attributed to the prophet and in fact it is not recommended to stay up the night of eid praying. I could very well be wrong if you could clarify this issue it would be greatly apperciated.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.

This hadith has some weakness in it. However, the weakness is not excessive, [Dr. Nur al-Din Itr, Manhaj al-Naqd] and there is general agreement of the scholars that weak hadiths can be acted upon when it comes to virtuous deeds. [ibid.]

Now What?

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Knowledge is only through study." While some knowledge can be gained from reading or casually listening to lectures, the best means to gain knowledge is through finding a qualified teacher and then setting up a systematic program of learning. Picking up a book or reading an article and trying to figure things out on our own is no substitute for learning from someone who has a direct link to our living tradition.
