RE: Articles of Faith -- A Profile of Shaykh Ali Gomaa - Al-Ahram

Question:

It was very strange for a student of traditional Islam from Indian subcontinent to view your above article. [Originally posted on Seeker's Digest: http://blog.masud.co.uk/faraz.htm ] Hard to believe a traditional "scholar" would be like this. A jahil like me will find ample evidence in his outwardly demeanor to act against Sunna. I wonder if traditional ulema from Azhar are like this, then what is the condition of untraditional ulema. One of the Sheikh told me that it is not the knowledge of these words and letters that makes one a'lim but the action according to them.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

Shaykh Ali Gomaa is a man of righteousness, piety, and deep knowledge. He is respected by the ulema across the Muslim lands as such. There are reasons why he acts and dresses as he does. Those unaware of his circumstances and the conditions of the society in which he lives and operates should refrain from speaking ill of a respected scholar of Sunni Islam.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani

Now What?

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Knowledge is only through study." While some knowledge can be gained from reading or casually listening to lectures, the best means to gain knowledge is through finding a qualified teacher and then setting up a systematic program of learning. Picking up a book or reading an article and trying to figure things out on our own is no substitute for learning from someone who has a direct link to our living tradition.
