My sins are very grave: is the prayer of repentance alone enough?

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question:

I have read the articles relating to Salatul Tauba but I feel my sins are so grave that doing 2 rakats is not enough. Is it possible to repeat 2 rakats salatul Tauba more than once at any point in the day? Or is there something else one should do in beg Allah for His forgiveness? Apart from salatul Tauba and doing istighfar, is there anything I can do gain Allah's pleasure and have my sins removed from me?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate. May His blessings and peace be on His Beloved Prophet, the best of creation, and his family, companions, and followers

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

The basis of repentance is returning to Allah. Whenever you sincerely leave sins, blameworthy matters, or heedlessness, and turn to Allah penitently, this is repentance Allah loves. Keep good company, and avoid not only past sins, but the things that made you fall into sin in the first place.

And Allah alone gives success.

Now What?

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Knowledge is only through study." While some knowledge can be gained from reading or casually listening to lectures, the best means to gain knowledge is through finding a qualified teacher and then setting up a systematic program of learning. Picking up a book or reading an article and trying to figure things out on our own is no substitute for learning from someone who has a direct link to our living tradition.
