Is it permissible for a woman to dye her hair? What is the ruling for one who is married and for one who is unmarried in the Shafi'I school? Is it permissible to use commercial hair dyes?
It is permissible for a married or unmarried woman to dye her hair with any type of hair dye, whether it is the commonly known henna or whether or something else. However, it must be pure and non-harmful and she must avoid the color black, for dyeing one's hair that color is unlawful for men and women in our school. This is because the Prophet, may Allah bless him and give him peace forbade it, because it resembles the Jews. It is also unlawful for a married woman to dye her hair if her husband objects to it.
السؤال : هل يجوز للمرأة أن تصبغ شعرها؟ وما حُكم ذلك للمرأة المتزوِّجة والمرأة غير المتزوِّجة في المذهب الشافعي؟ وهل يجوز استعمال الصبغات التجارية؟
الجواب: يجوز للمرأة المتزوجة وغيرها أن تصبغَ شعرَها بما شاءت من أنواع الصَّبغ سواء في ذلك الحناء المشهورة أو غيرها طالما كانت طاهرةً غيرَ مضرة، لكن يجب اجتنابُ اللون الأسود فالصبغُ به حرامٌ على الرجال والنساء عندنا؛ لنهيه صلى الله عليه وسلَّم عنه لما فيه من التشبه باليهود. وكذلك يحرم على المتزوجة صبغُ شعرها إذا منعها زوجها منه.
