Wearing Things Made of Silver

Answered by Shaykh Amjad Rasheed

Question:

Is it permissible for a man to wear the following articles, if they are made of silver: A watch, a medal, a button and a pen? Does the ruling appy to it if it is only plated?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate. May His abundant blessing and most perfect of peace be on His Beloved Prophet, the best of creation, and his family, companions and followers.

In our school, it is not permissible to wear jewellery made of gold or silver for men, except for a silver ring, which is permissible. Other than it, is haram.

It is also haram for men and women to use things that are made of gold or silver, such as pens and spoons and other things except that jewellery [s. made of it] is permissible for women.

As for things that are plated with gold and silver, it is permissible for a man to wear it and use it, if the gold or silver are so little that if the plated thing was exposed to fire, none of the gold or silver would flow. If any of it would flow, it is not permissible for a man to wear it nor use it. Even for the woman, it would not be permissible to use, unless it is jewellery, for that is permissible for her.
