Marriageable relations: Are children of brother and sister through nursing allowed to marry?

Answered by Mufti Yusuf Mullan

Question:

A man X and a woman Y have drunk the milk of same woman for about one year. Can the son of man X and daughter of woman Y marry each other?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Wa alaikum salaam,

Yes. They can marry. (In fact, man A can marry woman B’s daughter himself!) [Haskafi, al-Durr al-Mukhtar 214/3]

Even in a situation of actual blood lineage the marriage between the son of man A and daughter of woman B is clearly permissible. At most they are cousins through nursing and marriage between cousins is perfectly fine.

And Allah knows best.

Now What?

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Knowledge is only through study." While some knowledge can be gained from reading or casually listening to lectures, the best means to gain knowledge is through finding a qualified teacher and then setting up a systematic program of learning. Picking up a book or reading an article and trying to figure things out on our own is no substitute for learning from someone who has a direct link to our living tradition.
