Is it necessary for women to attend the Eid prayers?

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question:

Is it permissible for me (a woman) to pray the Eid prayers at home alone or do I have to go the prayers with my husband in the morning? It's going to be really difficult to go out in the bitter cold so early in the morning with little ones and while being in a pregnant state. If I can pray at home, what do I have to do?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

It is not obligatory for women to attend Eid prayers, nor in itself recommended. If they do not attend, they do not perform the Eid prayer at home—it is only legislated in formal congregations.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani

Now What?

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Knowledge is only through study." While some knowledge can be gained from reading or casually listening to lectures, the best means to gain knowledge is through finding a qualified teacher and then setting up a systematic program of learning. Picking up a book or reading an article and trying to figure things out on our own is no substitute for learning from someone who has a direct link to our living tradition.
