Regarding the kaffara for oaths, do you pay it the same way to the same recipients for Zakat or is it permissible to give an equivalent amount of money to feed and clothe ten people to an Islamic organization (like a welfare centre)?
The recipients for the Kaffara (expiation) for broken oaths as mentioned in the Qur’an “Its atonement is the feeding of ten poor (masakin) persons with the middle sort…(6:89) So the recipients of kaffarah for oaths are the poor (masakin) and it can be given to any organization who would act as agents on behalf. The food or clothing that is given as Kaffarah will have to be given to those persons who are eligible to receive zakaat.
And Allah knows best
Faraz's note: In general, one should be careful about which Islamic organizations one gives one's zakat or expiation money, as many (especially more 'modern' type ones) are not at all careful about not mixing different types of donations, and take many unacceptable fatwas, especially for zakat.
