Answered by Shaykh Abu Usamah

Question:

I live 100 miles away from my wife's parent’s house. When I visit them, as I am considered a traveler due to the distance, can I shorten my prayers (qasr)? Or is it the case that since my in-laws have the same status as my parents, their house is considered my own house and so the Ruqsa of being a traveller is waived?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Al-Salam `alaykum

In the case you mentioned, I understand that your wife is living with you and that both of you visit her parents home now and then. Thus when travelling to your in-laws home you and your wife will be regarded as a Shar`i musafirs and the laws of a travellers WILL apply to both of you.

If your wife was living there then whenever you visited her there you will not be regarded as a musafir but a muqim. (Resident)
